Reflection – Assignment Two

The most important points I felt that attributed to my development on this part were mainly:

  • Using and developing ways to work with mediums that I wasn’t familiar with, or felt unconfident using.
  • Steering away from those I was confident wit h.
  • Finding systems to work on each exercise and finding one that suited me.
  • Researching areas of art that I was unfamiliar with and trying to understand movements I didn’t necessarily understand/agree with, and learning how to critique them in a way that I could comment fairly on the thoughts, works and theories that go with them.

By critiquing my own work and practices Part 2 Intimacy showed me:

  • I need to start moving away from mediums and styles I am familiar with and practice ways to work that I have not used before.
  • Move more fluidly through my work.

My feedback time with my tutor was very insightful and as a whole very positive. A lot of the points made were things I agreed with and had also noticed in my work as a whole.

Expanding from the points made above I particularly noted an increase in my development in mediums I wasn’t familiar with. Most notably with using chalk pencils in Pt 2, Pr 3, Ex 4 to achieve a good level of detail in the monochrome drawing.

also with my development of graphite drawings with still life objects such as fruit and vegetables.

This all helped me steer away from the familiar use of things like biro and fine liner and develop techniques with the graphite to get the textures of the different fruits and veg.

Also researching art movements such as modern contemporary art to understand a more theory based way of expressing art.

Although this made me more confident, I think it was hindering the flow of my work from one piece to the next as it was quite laborious and time consuming. I would like to move away from this approach and work more on the expressive side of things. I think that I can always start to re-incorporate this at a later date.

I feel this will free my style up a bit as was noted in my tutors critique that my work in some aspects was suffering from me worrying a little bit to much about detail and neglecting the felling and movement of a drawing.

All in all I feel a move towards this way of thinking and working is a good way to move forward and will definitely aid my progress.

I was pleased with my use of mixed media in Pt 2, Pr3, Ex 3 where I explored the ideas of layers, textures and surfaces to give the still life more volume

and this will be a theme I’d like to take further with buildings, the face and the human figure, developing this way of working with other shapes and forms.
