Sketching a seated figure with a baggy jumper or shawl was the direction for this exercise. The main focus was to pay attention to the way that the folds hung and flowed around the body supporting it. Observing how the fabric moulds around the soft or sharp edges, contours and the points of tension causing it to wrinkle into the folds, tight, slack, loose, bunched etc.
I drew a seated woman stretched on a sofa with a light shawl around her shoulders. This gave great scope as one knee was up pulling the fabric tight, then it hung slack between the other knee that then pulled it tight to create a prominent diaper fold with intricate wrinkles flowing to the floor. Some drop folds can be seen off the right hand shoulder and some half lock folds are apparent over the right hand and arm.
I portrayed it in white colour pencil as it was a Sunday morning and I liked the effect of the soft light seeping through the window from behind. It gave it a nice warm easy going feel to the drawing.
