Pt 4, Pr 3, Ex 2 – Essential Elements.

Focusing on 6 quick studies of different poses I was assigned to focus on shading to express the form of the model completing each one in 10 minuets. This meant that I had to focus and make snap decisions of the main areas of light and dark and shade between then to create the tonal grades.

It was difficult to do this in such a short space of time so I had to just emphasise as much as I could to give the shapes volume.

I managed to keep the proportions relatively intact by carefully looking back and forth as to where the shapes were in relation to each other. Distinguishing the main areas of light and shade first helped, then I could break each plane down easier into more detail.

The shading itself was a little rushed due to the time limit, and I struggled a little to define the back muscles as well as I could have, the smoother sections of the legs were the easiest to render but it was a good exercise to push you to make split decisions of the groups and shapes that the shadows and cast shadows make. Working in the detail as much as possible in the time given.
