Now we are getting back to a bit of normality I was finally able to attend a life class held locally by Inch Arts, (https://www.facebook.com/InchArts), which can now become a regular weekly two hour session for me.
For the first half we did three 5 minuet poses followed by a 25 minuet pose.

It’s a different experience to draw live and can be a bit nerving so I concentrated on the gesture for the 5 min sketches to get a feel for the environment, trying to get some more definition in the longer pose. Looking back at the work I would like to focus more on definition of the anatomy, and also becoming more aware of reference points such as the space between the knee and the elbow, where the hands are positioned to the face and body etc. This was a point the tutor explained would be a good idea to focus on next time which I fully agreed with, especially with poses like the lower one where foreshortening plays a big part in perception.

The second pose was for 25 minuets and I decided to use a water wash over the charcoal to give the drawing some depth and intensify the lines a little. I think this worked quite well, however the proportions I seemed to be struggling with. I wasn’t standing back and seeing the full picture in proportion and ended up not being able to match up the reference points which I did try to correct on the left shoulder, hand and leg. These are important lessons for me of being able to look back at my work, criticize it, and work out what I need to be aware of and work on for the next time I pick up the pen. Great session, constant progress.
